Before we get into the charity that we are supporting, it is important that you understand a little about this mysterious disease. As explained on Mayoclinic.com :
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that can affect more than just your joints. In some people, the condition also can damage a wide variety of body systems, including the skin, eyes, lungs, heart and blood vessels.
An autoimmune disorder, rheumatoid arthritis occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks your own body's tissues.
Unlike the wear-and-tear damage of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis affects the lining of your joints, causing a painful swelling that can eventually result in bone erosion and joint deformity.
The inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis is what can damage other parts of the body as well. While new types of medications have improved treatment options dramatically, severe rheumatoid arthritis can still cause physical disabilities.
Tragically, the onset of this disease can begin at any age. As explained on WebMD.com, Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis(JRA), often referred to by doctors today as juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), is a type of arthritis that causes joint inflammation and stiffness for more than six weeks in a child aged 16 or younger. It affects approximately 50,000 children in the United States.

Again this year, we have decided to place the focus on juvenile patients because those little hands and feet should never have to feel the pain of this horrific disease. The Oishei Children's Outpatient center provides both outpatients and inpatients with evaluations, treatments/care plans, and work to provide patients and families with social and school support through the Division of Immunology and Rheumatology.
